Report: Kevin Durant Opts Out Of His Contract

Kevin Durant made a move forward, and informed the Golden State Warriors that he plans to opt out of his current contract. He’s more interested in unrestricted free agency for the offseason. The information was also confirmed by Marc Stein.

Durant had a $51 million contract with the Warriors, and the second year of the deal was a player option estimated to $26.25 million. If Kevin Durant opts out of the contract, he will re-sign with the Warriors for a contract worth $158 million in five years.

“Just to clarify on Kevin Durant: Friday’s deadline compels Durant to opt IN on his $26.3 million for next season if he chooses, but league sources say he has already informed the Warriors that he will let the deadline pass quietly so he can become a free agent July 1,” Stein said.

This is not an alarm for Warriors fans, because this opt-out game is just a financial formality. Durant will actually sign with the team early on in his free agency. He made sure that everyone is aware of his desire to stay in the Bay Area for quite a while.

“Durant has said repeatedly that he intends to stay with Golden State after the market opens July 1, with sources close to the process saying that an agreement on a new deal with the Warriors is expected in the early stages of free agency,” Stein added.

Warriers General Manager Bob Myers said that Durant has every right to negotiate his contract.
“Sometimes you don’t negotiate. I’d love to have him for 10 years. Kevin Durant, look what he did for us last year, he did us a great service. He’s earned the right to sign whatever deal he wants. I just want him to sign a deal. But want him to be happy and want him to know that we want him as long as he wants to be here. He’s earned that, to kind of lay out the terms. He can do whatever he wants. That shouldn’t be a long negotiation. Our goal, to be honest, is to try to keep the whole thing together, so that’s the pieces of the puzzle we’ve got to try to figure out,” Myers said.

Well, Myers said it all.
