Report: Patriots Have A New Receiver

The New England Patriots have done some major changes within their rows, starting with Troy Niklas.

Niklas, who signed a one-year deal with New England earlier this offseason, can no longer call himself a Patriot, as he was released on Friday from the team.

However, the Patriots tight end spot is still pretty crowded with Rob Gronkowski, Dwayne Allen, Jacob Hollister, Will Tye, Ryan Izzo and Shane Wimann all on the team’s 90-man roster.

So, basically, Niklas never stood a chance. At least now he’ll have an opportunity to latch on to a team where he has a better shot at making their opening roster.

While Niklas was saying his goodbyes, Patriots signed free agent wide out Paul Turner.

Back in 2016 Turner signed on with the Philadelphia Eagles, didn’t play in 2017 and most recently had a cup of coffee with the New Orleans Saints, signing a future contract with the club in January.

In four games played in the league, Turner has caught 9 of his 14 targets for 126 yards.

This is the second wide out the Patriots added this week as they also brought in Devin Lucien and released safety David Jones.

While this surely is a major deal for the 26-year old Turner, his chances of making the opening 53-man roster are slim given the stiff competition at the receiver position, with names like Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, Jordan Matthews, Cordarrelle Patterson, Braxton Berrios, Kenny Britt, Malcolm Mitchell (for now), Devin Lucien and Riley McCarron all vying for spots on the active 53-man roster.

Given all that, Turner would have to satisfy with serving as a camp body, while trying to impress enough in practice and possibly preseason games to catch on with another club.
