Report: Patriots Make Final Decision Regarding Eric Decker

Eric Decker used New England’s current receiving unit’s situation, with Kenny Britt, Malcolm Mitchell and Jordan Matthews dealing with varying degrees of injuries, and took one step towards his professional goal to join the Patriots.

After working out Decker, the Patriots are expected to sign the free agent wide receiver to a one year deal. This signing comes less than 24 hours since the team released Jordan Matthews after he suffered a “significant” hamstring injury that was slated to sideline him for a while.

Earlier this offseason, Decker expressed his desire to play for the Patriots and compete for a Super Bowl and given his familiarity with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who coached him in Denver, he might fit just fine with the team.

“I think the Patriots would be a good fit and being drafted by Josh McDaniels in Denver,” Decker said back in June. “I talked with New England last year during the Free Agency process in June. That is always an option that I would definitely love to entertain.”

“I took a few visits and talked to some teams. At this point in my career, I want to go somewhere where I can compete for a Super Bowl and be in a good system and be with a quarterback that my skill set would be an addition to the team,” he added.

Decker has big success with the Denver Broncos where he totaled back to back 1,000-plus yard seasons to go along with 33 touchdowns over a four year span.

While he had some talks with the Patriots last offseason, Decker ultimately signed on with the Titans where he caught 54 of his 83 targets for 563 yards and one touchdown through 16 regular season games.

One player from the 90-man roster would have to be released in order to make room for Decker, and that decision will likely be announced once the team makes the signing official. As part of Patriots receiving unit, Decker will join Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Cordarrelle Patterson Malcolm Mitchell, Kenny Britt, Phillip Dorsett, Braxton Berrios, Riley McCarron, Paul Turner and Devin Lucien.
