Report: Patriots Just Released Another Veteran Safety

The New England Patriots released a veteran safety.

Eddie Pleasant put an end to his time with the Patriots. ESPN’s Field Yates confirmed that New England released the veteran two days after the team lost to the Carolina Panthers.

Pleasant signed with the Patriots in July. He spent most of his career with the Texans. The veteran safety totaled four total tackles in the three games this preseason.

The veteran was an undrafted free agent in 2012. With Houston, he managed to compile 116 tackles, and 2.5 sacks. He defended 17 passes and three interceptions.

The Patriots couldn’t guarantee Pleasant’s spot in the roster. The safety depth is supported by Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, and Duron Harmon. Without Pleasant, Jordan Richards has more chances of making the opening roster, and the same applies to Jason McCourty.

Head coach Bill Belichick made a decision during the third preseason game, trying McCourty out of safety .

“Well, Jason’s a very experienced player and he understands football concepts and a lot of just basic defenses, pass defense and run force concepts and the responsibilities that go with that. So he’s taken more reps at safety and those were good steps for him. He had some opportunities to play there in the game and had some positive plays, had a couple good tackles, made a good tackle on the goal line, run force and was involved in some coverage plays,” Belichick said.

“Like every player who plays last night, there were some things that he’ll learn from and he’ll see on film and we’ll correct and there were some things that he did well that we can build on and he can build on. It’s a combination of those. We’ll see how that process unfolds going forward,” the head coach added.

We’ve seen so many releases lately, and it’s strange how each of these took place in the preseason. Belichick sure has a huge plan in his head, and we do believe that it will work for the team.
