Details Emerge on Dwayne Allen’s Revised Contract With the Patriots

The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin gave the details about Dwayne Allen and his restructured contract with the New England Patriots for the 2019 season.

“1. Cut his 2018 base salary from $4.5m to $3m, and adding $1.5m in incentives (playtime, receptions). Cap number decreases from $5m to $3,882,095,” Volin tweeted on Dwayne Allen’s money.

“*Cut Allen’s 2019 base salary from $6.9m to $6.4m, adding a $500k roster bonus due the third day of the ‘19 league year. Cap number remains $7.4m,” he added.

The finalization of this restructured deal will sure contribute to the closure of the contract situation that was developed in the offseason.

The restructure took advantage of less than 25% of the maximum potential 2018 cap savings, and also allows Dwayne Allen to get back his $1.5 million in lost salary. The $375,000 of the incentives are categorized as “likely to be earned.” Allen will get this if he participates in more than 40% of the Patriot’s offensive snaps in the season. Well, Allen accomplished this last year, and he took part in 41.7% of the snaps. If the veteran tight end’s season meets the criteria to achieve the rest of the incentives, $1.125 million will be debited from the team’s 2019 adjusted team cap number.

Let’s not forget that this is a ‘one year and we’ll see’ deal. We’re almost sure that Dwayne Allen won’t play next season with a cap number of $7.4 million, the team could choose to pick up his half million roster bonus in March, hoping to reach another agreement before the start of the regular season.
