Report: Patriots Sign Former Dolphins Tackle

The New England Patriots are getting ready for the new season, and now they are adding more depth to the offensive line. This time they landed a Dolphins tackle.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss confirmed that the Pats signed Dolphins tackle Eric Smith to the practice squad. Smith was part of the Patriots with former Texans tight end Stephen Anderson. The Patriots seems to have accepted his game, and decided to try him out.

Smith was undrafted out of Virginia after the 2017 NFL Draft. He signed a contract with the Dolphins last year, and even made the opening 53-man roster. However, he missed most of the season after landing on injured reserve. Smith was ready to come back this summer, but Miami waved him during the roster trimming.

New England needed more depth at offensive tackle, and Smith will sure give them the extra insurance they need. Starting left tackle Trent Brown and starting right tackle Marcus Cannon have an injury history. LaAdrian Waddle can’t be referred to as the iron man, so the Patriots will probably just enter the season hoping that these players will remain healthy.

Cole Croston and James Ferentz also made the practice squad, giving the Pats an initial layer of insurance in case one of those tackles can’t play.

Smith and Jace Billingsley filled the practice squad. The Patriots weren’t sure about the addition of injured linebacker Harvey Langi to the practice squad.

It’s more than obvious that the team will do more maneuvering to the roster. Head coach Bill Belichick is trying to create the winning formula, and he sure learned from the mistakes in the last season. The Patriots couldn’t win the Super Bowl, but this time they’re ready for the challenge. The roster is super strong, and they’re ready to roll. Good luck, guys!
