Report: Patriots Name Six Captains For 2018 Season Including Two First-Timers

The regular season will start off Sunday, and the New England Patriots have already announced the captains to lead them into the game.

The Patriots names their six captains today, and quarterback Tom Brady is one of them, of course. He will be accompanied by running back James White, special teams ace Matthew Slater, center David Andrews and safeties Devin mcCourty and Patrick Chung.

White and Chung are new names, and they are named captains for the first time in their professional career. The first-time captains are taking the position of Dont’a Hightower, Rob Gronkowski and Duron Harmon. This is the first time Hightower and Gronk aren’t named captains since getting the honor for the first time in 2016. Harmon was named captain for the first time in 2017.

White is definitely a reliable weapon in the team’s offense. He managed to develop his game, and has shown great capacity as a leader.

“I’d definitely try to help anybody that steps in this building. [LeGarrette Blount and Shane Vereen] helped me when I was a young guy so it’s only right that I help the younger guys. Just try to string them along and try to help them succeed as best they can,” White said prior to the NFL Draft the past offseason.

Chung is in the midst of his second sting with the team, and has found a rather concrete role in their secondary as a box safety. Head coach Bill Belichick praised him, considering him one of the best players at that spot.
Slater and McCourty will hold the honor of captain for the eighth time in a row. Andrews received the honor for the second season in a row.

Tom Brady was first named captain in 2002, and this will be his 17th consecutive season. He’s still strong on the field.

Good luck, Pats!
