Just In: Patriots Work Out Former Jets Receiver

The New England Patriots lost two games so far, and they won’t settle for anything less than a victory next time. The team risked too much with the last few transactions, and now they are working out a former Jets receiver.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network said that the team worked out former Jets receiver Jeremy Kerley. It’s more than clear that the team is trying to deepen the receiving unit. They were also checking up on free agent wide out Dontrelle Inmann earlier this week.

Kerley is a former fifth-round pick of the New York Jets. He played five seasons in New York then joined the San Francisco 49ers. 2016 was the best statistical season of the receiver. He caught 64 of his 115 targets for 667 yards and three touchdowns. Kerley made a comeback in New York, but was limited to eight games in 2017.

Kerley signed with the Buffalo Bills this offseason, but was cut recently. When it comes to his career, Kerley caught 270 passes for 3,116 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The Patriots are still looking for a receiver’s help. Julian Edelman is still out and Josh Gordon wasn’t active in the Week 3 game against the Detroit Lions.

Many would agree that the receiver position for the Pats is super difficult to grasp.

“I would say receiver is a challenging position in our offense. We have a very graduate level type of offense. It takes a lot to learn. It’s not easy. Not easy for rookies. Not easy for veterans. It’s a lot of work. It’s time consuming. If we are going to be effective on offense we have to have a lot of people out there who can process information quickly and make adjustments. Everything changes week-to-week. Everything is a big adjustment,” Tom Brady said.

“Guys who handle it and can compete and have the skills do a good job. That is typically guys — we have had quite a few over the years who can pick it up and understand it. Josh [McDaniels] is a very intense coach and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It’s not going to work for everybody. That is just the nature of the NFL. There’s a lot of offenses I could go into that I wouldn’t work at very well. That is just the way it is,” the quarterback added.
