Report: New England Patriots Sign Cyrus Jones To A New Deal

Cyrus Jones is going back to Foxboro as the Patriots have added him to their active roster.

Jeff Howe of The Athletic confirmed the news, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter said that the Patriots have offered Cyrus Jones a two-year deal. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network gave body to the report, adding that the Patriots released running back Kenjon Barner in order to make room for Jones.

Jones was released in the final roster trimming earlier this month. He was the former second-round pick of New England after spending his collegiate years in Alabama. Jones struggled really hard to find his home in the league. He didn’t have much success in the rookie campaign in 2016 due to poor decisions and issues with ball security. In 2017, Jones suffered a torn ACL, and missed the entire year. Now he’s giving everything to put things under control, and there’s nothing better than joining the team he started his career with.

Jones may be added to the punt return department, and he may also have a role in the secondary at the corner. He may bring stability to the position, and the Patriots are already challenging the Detroit Lions. That’s a nice chance for him. In the preseason, Jones fielded six punts for 48 yards, and even head coach Bill Belichick had nice words for him after the game against Carolina in Week 3 of the preseason.

“Yeah, it was good to see him on the field against Carolina. He’s been out there in practice but it’s good to see him in game action. I thought he handled the ball well in the return game, kickoffs. He didn’t have a great chance on the punt, but I thought he made a good play with what he had. There wasn’t much there. He made a couple of guys miss on the kickoff return, handled the ball well, showed some run skills, played a little bit on defense. Hopefully we’ll get more of that this week. He’s certainly making improvements on his way back and we’ll see where he gets to. It was good to see him out there,” Belichick said.
