Report: Patriots Signing Former WR To Practice Squad

It seems like the New England Patriots can’t break ties with one of their former wide receivers. This time the team is bringing the former player back to the practice squad.

The Patriots engaged in a trade deal with the Cleveland Browns, and acquired Josh Gordon. The team released Corey Coleman in order to make enough room for Gordon on the 53-man roster. This put an end to Coleman’s time with the Patriots. However, the team is bringing him back to the practice squad.

Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network reported that the Patriots are interested in bringing back Coleman as a member of their practice squad. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network confirmed the potential move, noting that it’s official now. So, yes, Coleman is back with the Patriots.

Coleman was brought in Foxboro after the Week 1 game against the Houston Texans. Riley McCarron and Chad Hansen were released by the team, and Jeremy Hill was landed on injured reserve.

The addition of Gordon to the active roster is considered an upgrade, and the Patriots also want Coleman under the roof for extra insurance. The receiving unit is still shaky, and it’s more than obvious that the team is seeking a bigger support. Coleman is the former first round pick by the Browns. He spent his summer with the Buffalo Bills. Coleman totaled 56 receptions for 718 yards and five touchdowns in 19 games.

The bringing of Coleman back to the practice squad means that the team will have to make a corresponding move on the unit. The team is at the 10-man limit for the squad.

Coleman will give the team the insurance it needs, as the Patriots only have Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, Cordarrelle Patterson and Josh Gordon at the moment. So, having a first-rounder on the practice unit is more than necessary at the moment.
