Bill Belichick Defends Rob Gronkowski After Awful Criticism

Mike Lombardy is a media member for The Ringer at the moment, and he is also a former New England Patriots executive. That’s why we hear him talking about the team, and giving his opinion even when no one asks him to. Lombardi got his hands on Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, and said that he had lost his quickness. Head coach Bill Belichick decided to dispute this notion.

Belichick went on WEEI’s Ordway, Merloni and Fauria Show, and talked about Lombardi’s comments on Gronkowski. The head coach didn’t miss his opportunity to say that he still believes in the superstar tight end.

“I don’t know, that is a hard question. You know how it is week-to-week. Sometimes you feel a little better one week than others. Overall, he has been a pretty effective player for us this year and has been able to make plays down the field. He has been able to make plays in the intermediate zones. He’s had a couple catch-and-run plays, so I think he’s still been pretty effective,” Belichick said.

Gronkowski may not had the best numbers this season, but there is a good explanation for that. In the first month of the regular season, Gronk played without Julian Edelman as he was suspended for the first four games of the season. Josh Gordon wasn’t present until Week 3, and didn’t do really well in Week 4. Malcolm Mitchell, Kenny Britt and Jordan Matthews suffered injuries and were later released. The Patriots couldn’t rely on other receiving targets, and it was hard for Gronk to play by himself.

Edelman is coming back, and he will be on the team for Thursday’s game against the Colts. Josh Gordon is here, and so are the rest of the guys. The Patriots will come out with a strong receiver unit, and fans hope for a positive outcome.
