WATCH: Tom Brady Throws 500th Touchdown Pass

Tom Brady might hold more records and statistical distinctions than any player in professional sports. That’s what happens when you play the quarterback position at his level into your 40’s. But amazingly, there are records that Brady still hasn’t managed to break. He just took a major step toward one of them, though. Brady is now the third quarterback in NFL history to throw for 500 touchdowns. Here is the play in which Brady accomplished the feat. To make matters even better? The play went to Brady’s newest receiver: Josh Gordon. That makes him the 71st player to catch a touchdown from Brady, an NFL record.

The all-time record for career touchdown passes is 539. That is held by Brady’s long-time rival Peyton Manning at 539. Brett Favre is next on the list with 508. But after that, things get very interesting. Brady is not the only contender for the record. Drew Brees is in fourth place with 496 scores. He is obviously still active, and he figures to play another few seasons just as Brady will. The two will likely jockey for the lead in that race for the next several seasons before a winner is ultimately determined by who is able to play longer.

Brees and Brady haven’t played in the same conference for over a decade, so they are hardly considered rivals, but statistically speaking, they are at very similar points. Brees is third in all-time passing yardage. Brady is fourth. Brees is the all-time leader in completions. Brady is in fourth there as well. They are going to end up on quite a few lists together when their careers are over. Neither Brady nor Brees should mind their company in that regard. They are two of the finest passers of all time. But tonight belongs to Brady.
