Ex-Patriots Players Recall Harrowing Stories Of Aaron Hernandez

Former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was the main focus of six-part series by The Boston Globe’s Spotlight team. The rise and fall of Hernandez is still making headlines.

Aaron Hernadez played three years with the New England Patriots. 2012 was his final year as a NFL player. the third installment of the series is focused on Hernandez’s behavior that led to the murder of Odin Lloyd in 2013.

“There would be swings where he’d be the most hyper-masculine, aggressive individual in the room, where he’d be ready to fight somebody in fits of rage. Or he’d be the most sensitive person in the room, talking about cuddling with his mother. Or he’d ask me, ‘Do you think I’m good enough to play?’ ’’ former Patriots receiver Brandon Lloyd said.

Lloyd recalled his discussion with Wes Welker in which the former Pats receiver warned him about Aaron.

“He is looking at me wide-eyed. And he says, ‘I just want to warn you that Hernandez is going to talk about being bathed by his mother. He’s going to have his genitalia out in front of you while you’re sitting on your stool. He’s going to talk about gay sex. Just do your best to ignore it. Even walk away,’” Lloyd added.

Spotlight’s report details Hernandez’s temper and his threats against Welker.

Quarterback Tom Brady did not really like Hernandez’s behavior, too. At one occasion, Hernandez was sidelined for the practice and turned out to be a distraction. He called head coach Belichick “daddy” and Brady could not take it anymore.

“He was out at the walkthrough in flip-flops trying to run around. He was laughing. He was loud. And Tom keeps it serious in the walkthrough. And Tom says, ‘Shut the f— up. Get the f— out of here,’” Lloyd said.

Patriots players knew pretty much everything about Hernandez and the troubling circles he ran in. “I knew they were trouble. Everybody kind of did,” former Patriots linebacker Dane Fletcher said.

Some tried to reach out to Hernandez and pull him towards the bright side. Josh McDaniels and Alex Guerrero tried, but their efforts went down the hill.

Hernandez was hit by a life sentence for the murder of Odin Lloyd, and killed himself inside his sell days in April of 2017.
