Watch: Belichick Asked To Compare Khalil Mack To Lawrence Taylor
October 18, 2018
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick coached some of the greatest pass-rushers in the NFL. He stood alongside Willie McGinest, Mike Vrabel, Richard Seymour, and Chandler Jones. They won championships and had huge numbers under Belichick. However, Lawrence Taylor is one the greatest defensive players in the league. Belichick was his linebacker coach for four years, and then became defensive coordinator for another six years. Belichick also witnessed Taylor’s rise, and after his retirement, the head coach said that the league would never see another rusher like the legend.
Khalil Mack is one of the players who tried to take Taylor’s place. He has five sacks in five games for the Bears, and accumulated 19 tackles, four forced fumbles, two pass breakups, a touchdown and an interception. Mack is the leading the defensive move in the Chicago Bears after the trade deal with the Oakland Raiders. Experts said he was the NFL’s first defensive MVP since Taylor in 1986. When reporters wanted to know Belichick’s opinion on Mack and Taylor, he dismissed the comparison instantly.
“Wait a minute, we’re talking about Lawrence Taylor, now. I’m not putting anybody in Lawrence Taylor’s class,” the Patriots head coach said.
Mack has an excellent resume, but Taylor is not someone you replace. Mack is a two-time All-Pro, but Taylor achieved all this in his first six seasons. Unlike Taylor, Mack has never topped 15 sacks in a year. Taylor was able to top 20, and won two Super Bowls. Mack is the new era’s best rusher, but nothing can ever bring him even close to Taylor.
Some reporters are trying to build Mack up, and he has a great chance to achieve great results. Jon Gruden was stupid enough to trade him, and that may be a decision that he will regret forever. Let’s see how will things go with Mack.
