Bill Belichick Gives Assessment Of Devin McCourty’s Recent Play

The New England Patriots defense is getting stronger with every day that goes by. However, Devin McCourty still has some points to work on.

The veteran safety provided a few touchdowns in the last few games. He also allowed Tyreek Hill to reach two touchdowns. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick talked about Devin McCourty and his struggles, pointing out that he needs to improve. However, Belichick still holds him in high regard on the Patriots’ roster.

“Yeah, Devin’s still – he’s one of our best players. We had three bad plays that cost us 21 points. Two on defense, one in the kicking game. I mean there were plenty of other plays, too. But you throw 21 points up there on three plays; it’s hard to have a good day when you do that,” Belichick said.

The head coach answered questions about McCourty, but he still generalizes it as more of a team issue. McCourty was not the only player to struggle in the win over the Chiefs. His twin brother Jason McCourty was blamed for Kareem Hunt’s 67-yard touchdown to open the second half. Duron Harmon allowed Tyreek Hill to reach a 75-yard touchdown to tie the game at 40 before Brady’s winning drive.

Defacto defensive coordinator Brian Flores noted that the Patriots defense needs to strive for consistency.
“I think consistency is something that we strive for on a daily basis in this game, or really in anything. I’d say we’ve played how we wanted to play in pockets. I thought the first half was a great example of that and we had some success. We’ve just got to do a good job of just playing more consistent. I think our guys understand that. We talk about it. We talk about being consistent, and we talk about just working to improve that consistency really on a day-to-day basis. I think they’ve bought into that and they’re working to get that done. We’ve just got to continue to work at it and then we’ve just got to produce on the field. That’s really what it boils down to,” Flores said.
