Patriots Release Running Back And Former 3rd Round Pick

The New England Patriots released some high profile players from the practice squad on Mondy. Kevin Duffy of the Boston Herald, the Patriots have released rookie running back Ralph Webb from the practice squad. ESPN’s Mike Reiss says that defensive tackle Vincent Valentine was also released by the team.

The Patriots signed Webb as an undrafted free agent, and he was one of the greatest players in the backfield in the past season. Webb did a good job in the preseason opener against the Redskins. He rushed for 46 yards, had two touchdowns, and converted two 2-point conversions. In the preseason, Webb totaled 102 yards rushing, and was able to catch five passes for 28 yards and three total touchdowns. The running back was released during the final roster cuts.

New England had an excellent running back unit made by Sony Michel, James White, Jeremy Hill and Rex Burkhead. However, he did find his way to the the Patriots’ practice squad.

Burkhead and Hill were injured, and the team placed them on injured reserve. So, it does come as a surprise to see that the Patriots released another running back. Are James White and Sony Michel enough for the receiver unit?

The running back carried a major workload in his four years. Webb marked a drop in his production in senior year.

Valentine is a former third round pick for the team during the 2016 NFL Draft out of Nebraska. During his rookie season, Valentine played in 13 games and had 2 starts. He totaled 19 tackles and a sack.

Valentine spent the 2017 campaign on injured reserve as he suffered a knee injury. The Patriots added the likes of Danny Shelton, Lawrence Guy and Adam Butler, so Valentine had nothing to do there. He was released in the final roster cuts, but came back to the practice squad. However, the team made another decision regarding his place in the team.
