Patriots Set To Host 2nd Round Pick For Visit

The New England Patriots are eyeing one of the more capable prospects to hit the free agent market as the team is ready to host free agent safety Obi Melifonwu. The second-round pick is set to visit the Patriots on Friday.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network confirmed the visit of the second-round pick. Melifonwu was released by the Oakland Raiders and is making rounds of visits with the NFL teams. He also visited the Dallas Cowboys. The Patriots are also interested in the safety, and they will definitely want to take a look at Melifonwu.

New England may easily sign the former second-round pick if they decide so. Melifonwu is from Grafton, Massachusetts and spent his college game in Uconn, so his New England Roots are very strong.

The safety was injured badly, and was held to just give games in 2017. He totaled six tackles during his rookie season. Melifonwu landed on injured reserve during the season, and had a slow start in 2018. He was placed on IR to start the year, and let him go on Tuesday.

During his last season at Uconn, the safety had really impressive numbers. He recorded 118 tackles and four interceptions while being active in all 13 games in 2016. Before the NFL Draft, the safety run a 4.4 40-yard dash, 7.07 second 3-cone drill and put up 17 reps on the bench press convincint everyone that he is a great athlete.
The Patriots met with Melifonwu before the NFL Draft, meaning that their interest dates beyond this visit.

Experts are still concerned about Melifonwu’s durability because of his time in the league. However, this does not change the fact that the safety has great potential, and his potential addition is something Pats do on a regular basis.
Melifonwu is young enough to become an impact player for any team in the league.
