Report: Patriots Made Official Decision On Cyrus Jones

Cyrus Jones will have to say ‘goodbye’ to the Patriots once again.

The New England Patriots released the cornerback on Saturday night after spending a few weeks with the team. Cyrus Jones was first released during the final roster cuts this summer. He signed on with the Ravens practice squad, but the Patriots signed him onto the active roster in mid-September.

Jones was not active in Thursday’s game against the Colts. We did see him play against the Dolphins. The cornerback totaled one tackles, and fielded five punts for 45 yards. The Patriots were already desperate in their need for help in the punt return game during the first few games of the season. However, Julian Edelman is back, and he will be in charge of carrying the load in the punt return game. In other words, the Patriots do not need Jones anymore.

The cornerback is a former second round pick of New England in 2016. Jones spent his collegiate years at Alabama under Nick Saban. He was a star for the Crimson Tide, but did not have much luck in the league. In his rookie season in 2016, Jones struggled with ball security on the field, and was plagued by decisions.

In 2017, Jones tore his ACL, and was kept out of the field for a year. He did not expect to come back to Foxboro now.

“Would you expect to be back here that quick? I mean, no, I just took it in stride and was moving on with my future. But I understand the NFL is a business. You just have to be ready when your number’s called – your phone number, your jersey number, whatever. That’s part of the process. So, when [the Patriots] called and expressed interest for me to come back, I was all for it. Everybody was excited to see me, as I was excited to see them. It was great,” he said upon his return last month.
