Report: Sony Michel To Undergo MRI On Knee

The Patriots are now holding their breath as it relates to Sony Michel. New England’s first round rookie running back left Sunday’s eventual win over the Bears with what looked like a pretty nasty knee injury. Michel was rolled up on by Chicago’s Bilal Nichols on a 1st & 10 play and fumbled the football upon getting his knee banged up.

Michel was down on the field before being helped to the sideline. Upon getting there and being looked at by trainers, he was then carted to the locker room and eventually ruled out for the remainder of the contest.

Following the game there wasn’t much information given about Michel’s injury, but Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is reporting now that the back will undergo an MRI on Monday to see exactly what kind of injury he’s dealing with.

This is a though blow for Michel as he was just starting to make his mark in the NFL after missing the preseason and Week 1 after having a procedure done on his knee to drain fluid from it. After returning to form from that injury, Michel has been on fire over the last three weeks entering Sunday rushing for over 100-yards twice to go along with four touchdowns.

Before suffering this injury on Sunday, Michel looked to be on his way for another strong game as he rushed for 22 yards on four carries and caught his lone target for 13 yards.

“It’s tough to see a guy like that go down,” James White said of Michel after the game. “He’s been battling some injuries and been working hard and playing well. Just hope for a speedy recovery for him.”

He added: “I saw him. Just looked him up, hope for a speedy recovery for him, whatever it happens to be, I’m not sure. He’ll attack it, whatever — whatever it happens to be.”

If Michel is slated to miss time due to this injury, the Patriots currently have just James White and Kenjon Barner on the roster at the running back position. While they may have to add another player to add some more depth to the position, White knows that he’ll be called on even more to produce on offense.

“When guys like him go down, guys like myself and Kenjon just have to step in and fill the void and make the most of the opportunities we get,” he said. “We both run hard and try to get open in pass routes and just try to find a way to make plays.”

On the day, White was able to rush for 40 yards while catching eight of his ten targets for 57 yards and two scores. Barner, meanwhile, rushed for 36 yards on 10 carries in Michel’s absence.
