Report: Obi Melifonwu Reacts To Joining Patriots

The New England Patriots did not sign a big fish at the NFL Trade Deadline this season. Fans are used to see their favorite team adding a great star like Kyle Van Noy and Akeem Ayers at the deadline and getting them all ready for the Super Bowl. But, the team did not trade for such a name, and decided to take a different route. The signing of Obi Melifonwu was sort of surprise for many.

Obi Melifonwu is a second-round pick for the Oakland Raiders, and he played in only five games for them. The safety dealt with several knee and injuries, and Jon Gruden was not ready to give him enough time to recover and released him in October.

The Patriots did not miss the opportunity and rushed to sign the safety. Melifonwu grew up in Grafton, Massachusetts and played college ball at UConn. In other words, he came back home.

“The performance the Sox had against the Dodgers was unbelievable. Being from Massachusetts, how great New England sports are, it’s incredible. So being at Gillette (Sunday night) was extremely special to me. I’ve lived in Massachusetts my whole life, really. The Patriots have been my favorite team since I started watching football. I’ve always wanted to go to a game but never had the opportunity . . . to watch a game before I got to play there, especially seeing Rodgers vs. Brady, 12 vs. 12, that was incredibly special,” Melifonwu said, adding that being a Patriot is the best thing for him.

The Patriots were really focused on their safety position. They have enough patience for injured players, but Melifonwu says he is ready to take the field for Sunday’s contest against the Tennessee Titans. We do believe that the safety will use every chance that was given to him.
