Report: Patriots Sign Former Steelers Receiver

The New England Patriots released Josh Ferguson just two days after signing him to the practice squad. The team decided to replace him with wide receiver Damoun Patterson.

The Patriots worked out Ferguson before adding him to the practice squad. However, he did not quite fit in the unit. Ferguson went undrafted out of Illinois in 2016. The Indianapolis Colts signed him, and he played the first two years of his career with the team. He was active in 26 games and had 16 carries for 25 yards. Ferguson hauled in 23 of his 30 targets for 152 yards and expressed his ability to play as a kick returner. He fielded nine kicks in his professional career for 166 yards which gave him 18.4 yards per return average. Ferguson spent some time with the Houston Texans practice squad, too. The Patriots also released running back Kenneth Farrow earlier in the week. They did not bring another back, and decided to increase the depth at the receiver position.

Patterson first entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Youngston State. He signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers in May. The receiver spent his summer and the preseason with the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the team released him before the regular season.

The receiver signed a deal with the Tamba Bay Buccaneers practice squad on October 10, and was released a month later.

At Youngstown State, Patterson totaled 52 receptions for 1,039 yards and six touchdowns during the 26 games he played in. He logged three rushing attempts for 36 yards.

Patterson will join the Patriots practice unit consisted of linebackers Ufomba Kamalu and Calvin Munson along with offensive tackle Eric Smith, quarterback Danny Elting, tight end Stephen Anderson, cornerback Jomal Wiltz, defensive back David Jones and defensive linemen Frank Herron and Trent Harris.
