Tragic: High School Football Player Dies After Hit In Game

The world of football was shocked after the tragic death of a high school football player.

Jeremiah Williams, a junior cornerback at Greenville High died at a Jackson hospital due to the injuries he suffered during a game. The high school football player was in intensive care for a week after the tackle that killed him. He tried to make the tackle and ended up fracturing two vertebrae in his neck. Williams was brought from a home game vs. Madison Central on Nov. 2. Next day, he was placed on a ventilator at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

The Clarion Ledger reported that John Rea, a Madison Central parent, started off a GoFundMe campaign and raised money for the Williams family to help them cover the hospital expenses. The campaign managed to raise $41,115 by Friday afternoon, and smashed the original goal of $10,000.

“It is my prayer the Good Lord will put his healing hands on this young man, his family, and community. The entire state of MS is rallying behind you, Jeremiah,” Gov. Phil Bryant tweeted on Sunday.

Coach Sherrod Gideon told media members that the player broke his neck while trying to make a tackle. The game was cancelled. Medical reports confirm that Williams broke his C1 and C4 vertebrae on the hit. He was given CPR on the field and was then airlifted home.

Channel 2 Action News reported that Pike County (Georgia) varsity football player Dylan Thomas died from a head injury he suffered during the game last month. Thomas suffered the injury in the first half, but he felt good until after intermission.

Thomas’ uncle, Nick Burgess, said that Thomas was injured in the second quarter of the game and that he collapsed on the sideline in the second half. Thomas’ arm and leg went numb and he was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He had a surgery to relieve his brain swelling which put him into coma and unfortunately he passed away. Pike County coroner’s office confirmed that Thomas died of cardiac arrest caused by the hit.

“Nothing more can be done for Dylan Thomas it is all up to GOD and Dylan’s fight to live at this point he still in very critical condition. Doctors have done everything they possibly can so please keep praying,” Burgess said before the player died.
