Obi Melifonwu Emotionally Opens Up About His First Game With Patriots

Playing with the New England Patriots is like a dream come true for most players. Rookies drafted this season do not remember the league before quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick were winning Super Bowls. Obi Melifonwu was given a great chance, and he had his first game with the Pats.

Being coached by Bill Belichick means being coached by the best coach in the league. Obi Melifonwu was born and raised in Grafton, Massachusetts. He played his college ball at UConn. So, joining the Pats is good in several aspects. Meliwonfu is playing for the best NFL team that happens to be his hometown team. That’s more than great.

NFL experts did not think that Melifonwu would play for the Pats when the Oakland Raiders first drafted him. The team released him in October, and Melifonwu could not miss the chance. NESN’s Zack Cox reported that playing with the Patriots for the first time was a big deal for Melifonwu.

“It felt amazing to strap up the shoulder pads, put on No. 22, put on the Patriots helmet and just be out here with my teammates. Wearing the logo is something that’s special,” he said.

The Patriots had a good plan for Melifonwu. He was thrown right in the fire, and lined up early in the game alongside Devin McCourty, Duron Harmon and Patrick Chung. Melifonwu played in only eight snaps, but was great on the field.

“I think it’s going real well. It’s something that I’m spending a lot of time on, extra time, whether it be with Steve or the other players. Just trying to digest the system and learn as much as I can and know where they’re going to contribute to playing.”

The Patriots never care about their players’story. They are more interested in the quality of their play.
