Just In: Patriots Reportedly Tried To Trade For Demaryius Thomas

Josh Gordon was suspended again, and the Patriots will have to do a second thinking now. The team struggles on the field as Tom Brady showed his first signs of aging. Tight end Rob Gronkowski does not look like himself either. How will the team play without Josh Gordon? Well, it seems like the team was getting ready for a similar scenario as they tried to trade for Demaryius Thomas.

Jeff Howe from The Athletic said that the team sort of knew that Gordon is trouble, and tried to make an empty spot for Demaryius Thomas before the trade deadline.

“Prior to the trade deadline, the Patriots attempted to acquire Demaryius Thomas and denied an inquiry for Phillip Dorsett. Even with Josh Gordon playing well, the Pats recognized the possibility that Gordon wouldn’t last the season,” Howe reported.

This does not come as a surprise. Jay Glazer reported that New England is eyeing a “bonafide premium wide receiver.” Ian Rapoport said that Demaryius Thomas is someone the Patriots are interested in, and saw the connection between him and Gordon’s team disciple for tardiness.

However, Thomas ended up playing with the Texans, and the Broncos got a fourth-round pick. Michael Giardi said that the Patriots pulled out a “competitive” offer. However, they wanted the Texans to take part on Demaryius’ salary, but received a ‘no’ for an answer.

During his time with the Texans, Thomas caught 20 passes for 238 yards and a couple of touchdowns. New England did not lose a superstar receiver, but many say that Thomas was a good fit.

Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, and Cordarrelle Patterson are the only receivers to boost the Patriots’ game. They are a great group, but let’s not forget Gronk’s problems. The Patriots are probably planning to rely heavily on their running back squad consisted of James White, Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead.
