Mike Tomlin Releases Bold Statement About Gronkowski’s Play

The Pittsburgh Steelers cannot really cope with the strong New England Patriots offense. Chris Hogan had to go 180 yards against the Pats in an AFC Championship Game. Wide receiver Julian Edelman has 28 catches in the last three contests against the Steelers. Quarterback Tom Brady runs a 11-2 record against Pittsburgh and has almost no trouble defeating them at Heinz Field. But, pretty much everyone knows that tight end Rob Gronkowski is the real Steeler killer. Does Mike Tomlin agree on this one?

Gronkowski played against the Pittsburgh Steelers in six occasions throughout his professional career. They did not manage to hold him below five catches of 70 yards. Last year, Gronkowski caught nine passes against Pittsburgh for 168 yards. This broke his personal record against the team of 143. Gronkowski has played almost a decade in the League, and the Steelers cannot just find a way to stop him. Mike Tomlin talked about this during his Tuesday press conference.

He knows that other NFL teams have found a way to slow down Gronk, “but we haven’t been a part of it. We’re looking to be.”

Tomlin said that “when you play a guy like him, it’s going to take multiple people and multiple techniques,” but the other question is who exactly those guys are going to be and what those techniques will include.

Ryan Shazier is out of the season and maybe even his career, so Pittsburgh does not have someone to stop the Patriots tight end. The Steelers hoped that Terrell Edmunds will be fit for this role, but he has to work on himself a bit more.

Will the Steelers use a cornerback on him? But Gronk is too big to be pressed at the line of scrimmage.

“It’s funny, because we hear that a lot: you haven’t had success against Brady and Belichick, but who has? It’s a new season with new teams,” Ben Roethlinsberger said.
