Report: New England Patriots Sign Ex-CFL Offensive Tackle To Future Contract

The New England Patriots won the AFC Divisional Round contest against the Los Angeles Chargers, and they are already thinking of their future. The team added an offensive tackle to a future deal Monday.

The Patriots signed offensive tackle Ryker Mathews for the upcoming season. The lineman spend two seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and he is a 322-pound BYU product. Mathews was undrafted in 2016, and signed a deal with the New Orleans Saints. The team put him on injured reserve and then released him.

The 26-year-old player ran a 5.06-second 40-yard dash with a 7.85-second 3-cone drill, 4.73-second short shuttle, 28.5-inch vertical leap and 8-foot, 7-inch broad jump and bench pressed 225 pounds 23 times. He really stood out at his pro day in 2016.

Patriots to lock up practice squad

The Patriots have already sealed a few deals. They signed center Jake Eldrenkamp and defensive tackle David Parry to future contracts this offseason. It seems like they will lock up the entire practice unit when the season will end.

New England signed offensive tackles Isaiah Wynn and Marcus Cannon through 2019 and beyond. Trent Brown, LaAdrian Waddle and Ulrick John will hit free agency after the season.

Mathews will compete for a spot on the team’s roster next summer.

New England is getting ready for the upcoming summer while celebrating the big win over the Chargers. Head coach Bill Belichick has created the perfect winning formula, and he is now trying to rebuild it.

The New England Patriots will also have to find a replacement for quarterback Tom Brady. He will not stick around forever. They have already eyed a few options, but there are taking some time before picking the right substitute for Brady. I mean, you do not really find someone that would play as good as him, right? But, they can take some time before making a huge step.
