Chargers Lineman Brandon Mebane Makes Devastating Announcement About His Family

Chargers defensive tackle Brandon Mebane goes through the worst tragedy in his life. His infant daughter, Makenna, passed away on Jan.3 due to heart defect.

Brandon Mebane said his daughter Makenna passed away on Jan. 3. Makenna had been battling a heart defect since her birth late last year. Brandon said his family is back in California. ‘I’m still thankful, and I thank God every day,’ he said. ‘We’re taking it one day at a time,'” reported ESPN’s Eric Williams on Wednesday afternoon.

“I’m just trying to take it one day at a time,” Mebane told media members on Wednesday. “It’s still painful. I thank God every day and still pray. … No matter where I am, I still think about her. I’m just happy I’m still able to play this game.”

The defensive tackle talked about Makenna’s struggles in December, noting that the baby had problems with her heart due to complications caused by her premature birth.

Makenna struggled with serious health problem

“The thing we were dealing with recently with my daughter was she had developed a stomach infection,” Mebane told the Chargers’ website. “This sometimes happens when babies come out premature. My daughter, she wasn’t supposed to be born until December 16. She came November 12 of this year. She was fine for a couple of weeks, for two weeks, and then she got sick with (her) little stomach intestines. They call it NEC (Necrotizing Enterocolitis). Basically, the baby swells up and all kinds of things happen. Her blood was low. They had to get her blood counts and all kinds of medicine to help her recover.”

Mebane missed the team’s playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday to spend more time with his family. However, he will suit up for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots, as reported by LA Times reporter Mike DiGiovanna.
