Report: Chiefs Fire Defensive Coordinator After AFC Championship Loss

The Kansas City Chiefs received the deadliest bullet on Sunday after the New England Patriots “killed” their chance to play in Super Bowl LIII. Tom Brady and Co defeated the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, and it seems like this was a good reason for the team to fire their defensive coordinator.

The Chiefs made an official announcement regarding their decision to fire defensive coordinator Bob Sutton on Tuesday. Sutton was part of the team for six seasons. He joined the Chiefs in 2013 after Andy Reid became the team’s head coach. However, the Chiefs were terrible regarding their defense in the past couple of seasons, and there was no other way to solve their “situation.”

Reid praises defensive coordinator Bob Sutton

“Bob is a good football coach and a great person,” Reid said in a statement. “He played an integral role in the success of our team over the last six seasons. I’ve said before that change can be a good thing, for both parties, and I believe that is the case here for the Chiefs and Bob. This was not an easy decision, but one I feel is in the best interest of the Kansas City Chiefs moving forward.”

Kansas City was 24th in the league in yards allowed per match (367.8) in the first season under Sutton. Things got better in every season until 2017. The Chiefs finished 28th in yards allowed per game (365.1) and 15th in points allowed per game (21.2). The season ended with 22-21 Wild Card loss to the Tennessee Titans in which the Chiefs’ defense allowed over 200 rushing yards while the team blew a 21-3 third quarter lead.

In 2018 the defense finished 31st in the NFL in total yards allowed per game (405.5), 31st in passing yards allowed per game (273.4), 27th in rushing yards allowed per game (132.1) and 24th in points allowed per game (26.3).

“Over the course of the past few days, the Chiefs have talked with players and coaches about defensive coordinator Bob Sutton, whose lack of adjustments has been a non-stop frustration,” Ian Rapoport tweeted. “They moved on today, and a prime job is open.”
