Report: Wes Walker Hired As Wide Receivers Coach In NFL

Recently, there have been a lot of reports stating that Wes Welker will be hired as a wide receivers coach.

For the past two seasons, Welker has worked with the Houston Texans as an offensive assistant. He was coaching the wide receivers in conjunction with John Perry. Reportedly, he was supposed to have an interview with the San Francisco 49ers. Further speculations emerged when his name was not included on a coaching staff roster for the 2019 season released by the Texans. This was supported by tweets by Texans beat reporter John McClain of the Houston Chronicle and 49ers beat reporter Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

Welker, 37, played 12 seasons in the NFL and totaled 903 catches for 9,924 yards and 50 touchdowns. He began his NFL career in 2004 as an undrafted rookie signing of the San Diego Chargers, where he played one game before being placed on waivers. Welker then signed with the Miami Dolphins for three seasons before being traded to New England in 2007.

His best years were with the Patriots, for whom he caught over 110 passes and 1,100 yards on five different occasions. Welker’s time with the Patriots ended in 2013 when he signed with the Broncos and played for two more seasons. Then, he played one season with the St. Louis Rams in 2015 after which he called it a career.

The 49ers have been shuffling their coaching staff in recent weeks, with defensive backs coach Jeff Hafley taking the role of a co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach for Ohio State; assistant offensive line coach Adam Stenavich going in Green Bay as an offensive line coach; quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello moving on to Denver to become the offensive coordinator; offensive assistant T.C. McCartney joining Scangarello as quarterbacks coach; and defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina getting fired.

In addition to Welker, three other coaches have joined the 49ers staff since the end of the season: Joe Woods, defensive backs coach/passing game specialist, Kris Kocurek, defensive line coach, and Shane Day, quarterbacks coach.
