Julian Edelman To Wave Green Flag At Daytona 500

Patriots receiver Julian Edelman was really busy in 2018, and it seems like he is sticking to the same schedule this year, too. Edelman was recovering from a torn ACL, became a father, and the NFL suspended him at the beginning of the season. His daughter was the brightest star in his world, and Edelman had enough strength to help the team win the Super Bowl. His performance in the playoffs was impeccable, and Edelman was named the Super Bowl MVP. The receiver caught 10 passes for 141 yards, and now he is part of Daytona 500.

You read that right. Being one of pro football’s greatest names is such an honor, and Edelman has already made a few public appearances. He presented an award at the Grammy’s, and was also invited at the Ellen Degeneres Show. As if that was not enough, Edelman is also assigned with a new task: he will be waving the green flag at Daytona 500.

Edelman will be the honorary starter for Sunday’s Daytona International Speedway as he will wave the green flag on the 61th running of The Great American Race. The Patriots receiver will be one of the two NFL names who will start the race. Houston Texas defensive end J.J. Watt will be there too, serving as the grand marshal.

“Julian Edelman is an incredible addition to the list of pre-race dignitaries for the Daytona 500,” said Daytona International Speedway President Chip Wile in a press release. “We’re honored to have such a superb athlete, who recently won on NFL’s biggest stage and was the Super Bowl MVP, wave the green flag for NASCAR’s premier event.”

Edelman joins the big Daytona 500 family

Edelman will join a group of NFL stars to have taken this role. Kenny Stabler (1977), Troy Aikman (1994), Jim Kelly (1995), Dan Marino (1998), Brett Favre (1999), Terry Bradshaw (2001), Ray Lewis (2013), and LaDainian Tomlinson (2017) are just some of the names who started the race.
