Patriots Players Testify To Support Education PROMISE Act

Matthew Slater, Duron Harmon and the McCourty twins were at the Massachusetts State House on Friday expressing their support of the Education PROMISE Act.

The champions voiced their support for the bill that was created to narrow the gap in funding that exists between rich and poor school communities. The four Patriots were in front of the Legislature’s Joint Committee of Education, and their support for the Education PROMISE Act sure means a lot.

“We come here today because of the personal values we all cling to,” Slater said in his statement. “As Mr. McCourty mentioned earlier, we have been gifted a tremendous, unique platform as professional athletes. We believe that platform allows us to lend our voices to causes and people that don’t always have the opportunity to have their own voices heard. Our hope today is to lend our voices to thousands of children, in particular impoverished children of color, who need all of our help. The reality is, no child gets to choose their family of origin, their race, the language spoken within their home, what learning limitations they may have, or their socioeconomic background. In turn, they don’t have a choice in what type of an education they will receive. It’s our belief that we should do everything within our power to give every child the opportunity to have the same learning experiences within our educational system.”

“We can’t stress enough the importance of education,” Devin McCourty added. “So I think for us getting the opportunity to come here and just speak about education, to talk about the importance of it, talk about leveling the playing field and making sure everybody’s getting what they need from an educational standpoint. We can kind of project our future with our youth with the more resources we put in to it and the more we kind of mold them into the humans that we want them to be, it’s only going to better our society.

“I think that we all feel that, with our platform that we have, it’s not only football. You try to be more than an athlete and obviously this is something that’s important to all of us and to get the opportunity to come out here and speak on behalf of so many other people I think was very important to us.”
