New England Patriots Sign Former Lions Wide Receiver

The New England Patriots are making a few changes to the roster, and now they are signing a former Lions wide receiver.

The information was first confirmed by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The Patriots are interested in inking a deal with Lions wide receiver Bruce Ellington.

“Free agent WR Bruce Ellington is signing a 1-year deal with the #Patriots, source said. He’s worked his way around the New England tree, now with the Pats,” Rapoport tweeted.

The former Texas and Lions receiver will sign a one-year deal with the team to add enough depth of the pass catching squad. Ellington made a free agent visit of Foxboro on Thursday and the two sides clicked. Both sides came to an agreement, and this deal is actually putting Ellington on the roster for the 2019 season.

Ellington’s most recent coaches were Bill O’Brien and Matt Patricia, we aren’t really surprised to see that the Patriots are interested in the wide receiver. He is skilled and talented, and head coach Bill Belichick will enjoy working with him.

Ellington is a former fourth-round pick of the 49ers in 2014 out of South Carolina. He parted ways with the Houston Texans and Detroit Lions. The Texans released the receiver in late October after he was placed on injured reserve due to an hamstring injury. The Lions picked him later in the season.

The receiver played in four games for the Lions, but had some really great numbers. He totaled 23 receptions on 30 targets for 132 yards.

In his 44 games, Ellington totaled 79 receptions for 769 yards and five touchdowns. He may be a nice addition to the Patriots offense, but the team should be worried about his durability. Ellington hasn’t played a full season in his professional career, and he played the most games in his rookie and sophomore year in the NFL.
