Report: New England Patriots Are Kicking The Tires On Raiders Tight End

The New England Patriots will probably try to boost their tight end area. The team released veteran tight end Dwayne Allen who signed a contract with the Miami Dolphins. Rob Gronkowski still hasn’t made a decision on his future career.

Veteran tight end Jared Cook could also join the organization. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Patriots may eventually bring in the tight end. Cook comes off the best season in his professional career. He hauled in 68 of his 101 targets as a player with the Oakland Raiders for 896 yards and six touchdowns. Each of these stats are career highs for Cook.

Spotrac projects that Cook may sign a deal that could give him over $7 million annually. They predict a two-year contract for the tight end at $14.3 million. How did they come to this number? They used the deals from Delanie Walker, Greg Olsen and Jimmy Graham.

Cook is a former third-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft out of South Carolina. He made a few stops around the NFL, playing with the Titans, Rams, Packers and Raiders. Throughout his professional career, Cook made the playoffs just once and it happened with the Green Bay in 2016. Cook performed at high level. In his three games with the Packers, Cook hauled in 18 of his 32 targets for 229 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

Despite the playoffs and the 2019 Pro Bowl nod, Cook wasn’t really a decorated player in his professional career. However, that doesn’t change the fact that he was an impactful one. Depending on his top priorities, Cook may consider joining the Patriots in a way most veterans do. These players could contend for the Super Bowl title and enrich their resume.

The Patriots could definitely use Cook on the field. Julian Edelman and Braxton Berrios are the only notable pass catchers on the active roster.
