New England Patriots Select Quarterback In NFL Draft

The New England Patriots selected former Auburn Tigers quarterback Jarrett Stidham with the 133rd overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

There was so much talking regarding the selection of Stidham. The Patriots hosted him on a visit, and selecting him doesn’t really come as a surprise.

In 2017, the quarterback threw for 3,158 yards with 18 touchdowns and six interceptions on a 66.5 completion percentage. The following season, his accuracy went to 60.7 completion percentage along with 2,794 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions.

At the NFL Combine, the 6-foot-2, 218 pounder was able to run a 4.81 second 40 yard dash, log a 31 inch vertical jump and a 110 inch broad jump.

“The 2017 Alabama win showed a mobile quarterback with good mechanics and intelligence who played with confidence and was able to convert in key situations,” writes NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein. “The 2018 tape shows a player who lost both his confidence and poise and began to play a rushed brand of football that seeped into his pre-snap planning and his post-snap accuracy. Stidham went from ascending prospect to developmental quarterback and he needs to find the right set of coaches and system to help rehab his confidence and timing.”

“He walked in Day 1 down there and he owned that team,” one scout relayed to Bob McGinn Football. “…He doesn’t have a great arm but he’s got an above average arm. He’s accurate. When he gets in your building he’s going to earn that 2 spot real quick. He’s got the makeup that if he has to play he could be a guy that surprises. He could be as good as any of these guys.”

Bernd Buchmasser wrote, “Jarrett Stidham is one of the best pure throwers in this draft class and has all the tools to become a starter in this league one day. While he needs the right offense and weapons around him to achieve success, he has landed in an ideal situation: Stidham will now compete for the number three quarterback spot — and potentially challenge Brian Hoyer for the number two role behind Tom Brady.”
