Edelman Shares Emotional Statement About Synagogue Shooting Near San Diego

Patriots receiver Julian Edelman took to his Instagram account to express his disappointment and sadness after the synagogue shooting.

“I’m so sad to be writing about another attack on a synagogue today on the Shabbat and on the last day of Passover,” Edelman wrote. “I’m so sorry for the loss and we are with you San Diego. I’m sand and angry, but also proud of the strength of our community. You can’t break us.”

Edelman always posts about holidays and big days in general. “Passover is a special holiday for the Jewish people. It’s a holiday that celebrates liberty and the pursuit of a better life. That’s a very American sentiment. No matter what your situation is, you can always fight for a better outcome. ‘If you will it, it is no dream,’”

The shooting occurred at Congregation Chabad on the last day of Passover, and it’s probably a hate crime. Police officers took a 19-year-old man in custody. According to sources, his name is John Earnest. At least one person was shot dead and several others were wounded, as confirmed by Mayor Steve Vaus.

Vaus said worshippers at the San Diego-area synagogue are familiar with safety protocols and had learned how to respond during a shooting.

“I think this could’ve been far, far worse but they were being proactive, they were ready,” Vaus said. “I think that saved a lot more bloodshed and loss of life.”

It was terrible and shocking for everyone. Vaus says this may be a hate crime because of the statements the shooter made when he entered the synagogue. Authorities are now trying to determine whether this shooting is related to the arson attack at a mosque in nearby Escondido from last month.

Vaus said that the congregation was targeted by “someone with hate in their heart.”

“I thought I heard shots, but I thought maybe it was a car,” a resident, Jake Padilla, said. “Then I heard it again and I heard people screaming. I started to run outside, and my wife yelled at me to call the cops instead. This kind of thing is getting too common. There’s too much hate in the country right now.”
