New England Patriots, Stephen Gostkowski Come To An Agreement

Stephen Gostkowski has been making headlines with his negotiations with the New England Patriots.

Sources reveal that Gostkowski re-signed a contract with the team. He agreed to a two-year deal to stay in Foxboro, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. We don’t know much about the exact figures that led to this agreement.

The initial reports came right after the San Francisco 49ers expressed their interest in the kicker. The rumor was actually a catalyst in the deal. The Patriots tried to seal the deal before other teams stole their kicker.

The Patriots drafted Gostkowski in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played 200 regular-season games in his professional career, and was successful in 87.4 percent of his field goals, 98.9 percent of his extra point attempts and he is also strong on kickoffs. Last year, Gostkowski had 27 od his 32 field goal attempts and was 49 of 50 on extra points in the regular season.

During his playoff career, Gostkowski was successful in 88 of his 92 extra point attempts and 38 of his 44 field goal attempts.

“Steve has been tremendously consistent,” Bill Belichick said of Gostkowski earlier this offseason. “He works hard. He trains well. He is in good shape. He has a strong leg. He is very poised and disciplined. He doesn’t get rattled. He doesn’t get that high on the big kicks and doesn’t get that low if something goes wrong. He is really steady and consistent. I’ve been so fortunate here to have two great, great kickers. I have never really worried about that position, thankfully.”

“I think that’s a guy that’s definitely taken for granted around here,” Matthew Slater said of Gostkowski back in October. “The kicker is a funny position in the league. Nobody really pays attention to you until you start missing kicks. He’s been so reliable and so consistent for the last 13 years. We’ve really been fortunate around here to have, in my opinion, two of the all-time great kickers. There’s really no surprise there. He does it in practice, his approach is the same, his mentality never changes and he came up big for us tonight.”
