Nick Saban Shares Important Coaching Lesson He Learned From Bill Belichick

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has been a successful coach for two decades in New England. But, if you ask him, it’s always the players. Belichick credits each and every player on his team. What does Nick Saban think about this?

Brady may be taking responsibility when his team loses, but he always praised them. The head coach trusts his players, and believes they are capable of doing miracles on the field.

University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban learned this great lesson from Belichick. They were together in Cleveland. Saban said it was the Patriots head coach who cautioned him against overcoachiching while in Cleveland.

“Sometimes, players are kind of depending on that kind of reinforcement all the time in practice, but in a game, there’s no coach out there,” Saban told reporters Thursday. “I used to coach like that when I was an assistant with the Cleveland Browns, and we’d have a scrimmage and Belichick would chew my butt out, man. He’d say ‘Let the players play.’ And I was like, wow, I’ve never had my butt chewed out before for coaching, teaching, but I have to say the same things sometimes to our coaches now.

“There’s a time where you’ve just gotta let the players play because in the game they’ve gotta know what to do, they’ve gotta know how to do it, and can’t depend on someone else to make the call for them. They can’t depend on somebody else to recognize things for them.”

This sure works for both Saban and Belichick. They have won 12 combined titles. That’s why both coaches value practice time. We all know that these two have reputations for being hard on players. But, that’s what helps players become stars. Belichick is trying to stimulate his players to become their best force and strength. The Patriots have won six Super Bowls during the Brady-Belichick era, and that sure means a thing. Former and current Patriots players have nothing but words of praise and respect for the head coach. Belichick may not be the most talkative person, but he can sure help the team win championships.
