Report: Patriots Make Decision On Patrick Chung’s Contract Extension

The New England Patriots made a decision on safety safety Patrick Chung regarding his contract extension.

ESPN’s Field Yates reported that Chung agreed to a one-year extension through the 2021 season with the team. We don’t have much information about the contract, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has a few details.

“S Patrick Chung was set to earn a base salary of $2.4M with bonuses that would take it up to almost $3M. With his 1-year extension, he’s now set to make $6M, source said. This likely lowers his cap number, too,” he tweeted.

Spotrac reports that Chung was under contract for the next couple seasons at $7.8 million. He had more than $900 thousand available in game and workout bonuses over that period.

Chung is a second-round draft pick of the 2009 NFL Draft. He played the first four years of his professional career in the Patriots before inking a three-year deal worth $10 million with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013. The safety spent one year in Philadelphia and returned to New England.

Chung was given an important role in the Patriots’ secondary over the past 10 years. He won three Super Bowls with the team. In 2018, he had 84 tackles, one interception, three pass break-ups and 0.5 sacks in 15 games.

The safety suffered an arm injury in the second half of the Super Bowl which put him under the knife twice. Chung he treated the shoulder injury he suffered in 2018 and the broken forearm from this year’s Super Bowl.

Jason McCourty knows what happened on the field. He said, “I said to (Matthew) Slater, ‘is it bad?’ He said, ‘I think he broke his arm.’ As a defense, we’re on the field, and there is nobody that can replace Pat. It’s not just like he goes down and it’s next person in. He plays safety, he plays linebacker, he plays the most different positions on our defense so when he goes down, it’s an adjustment on what guys can play different roles. Hats off to the staff and us as players for adjusting. Everybody knew that we had to pick up a little bit for Patrick and seeing him come back to the field with a sling on just encouraged us. This was a team win.”

The 31-year-old has 723 tackles, 54 pass deflections and 11 interceptions in his career.
