Report: Patriots Copy Tom Brady Decision With New Julian Edelman Contract

The New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady won his sixth Super Bowl last season. Receiver Julian Edelman won his third championship and the Patriots gave him a contract extension. Will Edelman follow Brady’s footsteps? The quarterback promised to play until he is 45, and Edelman may do the same thing.

Edelman was given a contract extension last week, and it includes $12 million guaranteed. He will also get some money that’s related to performance incentives.

The 33-year-old receiver was named the Super Bowl MVP last season. He has $6.5 million tied up in playing game incentives over the course of a three-year deal, as reported by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

Edelman has $1 million tied up in 2019 incentives, related to 80 and 90 catches. He has $2.5 million in 2020 incentives, set at 60, 70, 80 and 100 catches.

In 2021, there’s $3 million with triggers at six catch statistics – 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100.

Edelman talked after the Patriots’ organized team activities last week, and insisted that he still has a lot to do in the NFL.

I’ve accomplished goals in the past,” Edelman said. “And when you do that, you set new goals. I’ve been blessed and fortunate to attain and reach a lot of my dreams, but I still have a lot of other things that I want to go for. Got a big chip on my shoulder still, and I look forward to coming out here and contributing to the team and working hard each day, helping younger guys.”

After 10 years in the NFL, Edelman has earned $26 million, but testing the free agency option may give him $10 million per year.

It seems like the 2009 round draft pick won’t leave the New England Patriots.

“I love being here. I don’t want to be anywhere else, and I’m excited for this upcoming year,” Edelman added. “And I’m excited for this spring to work on our fundamentals and mold our team and keep it going. Honestly, I didn’t want to go anywhere, and I’m not going anywhere. So Boston, I’ll be back for a couple more.”
