Ex-Jets GM Shares ‘Remarkable’ Experience About Passing On Tom Brady In NFL Draft

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady helped the New England Patriots win six Super Bowls. Let’s not forget that the Patriots selected him with the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. The Jets passed on Brady in the draft.

Brady and his team dominated the AFC East for two decades. The Jets had four first-round picks in 2000, and used one of these to select one of the six quarterbacks selected ahead of Brady.

Former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum went on ESPN’s NFL Live to discuss the NFL Draft, and didn’t miss the chance to talk about the fact that Brady was overlooked 19 years ago.

“Actually I was in the draft room, I’ll never forget it,” Tannenbaum said. “We had four first-round picks in 2000 and we took Chad Pennington with the third of the four picks. And in the third round that year, this is remarkable — Bill Walsh drafts Giovanni Carmazzi of Hostra University, which was right across from the Jets facility and we’re like, ‘Oh my God, we blew it.’ Bill Walsh, this quarterback whisperer, takes Carmazzi, who’s across the street, in the third round. And we’re like, ‘Oh man. We just blew it.’ And then in the sixth round, some guy named Tom Brady went with the 199th pick.”

Brady celebrated his draft anniversary with a hilaruous photo of himself.

19 years ago today the @patriots took a chance on the guy in this photo: Me (199) . Thank you to EVERYONE who’s helped me to prove them right! Also, did they stop taking these photos after mine??”

During the conference call with media members, Brady was asked if he is disappointed.

“I don’t think disappointed is the word,” TB12 said. “I thing the team that has drafted me I’m just very comfortable with and whether it would be in the second round or the sixth round I think everyone starts on the same level. It’s a great opportunity to head back to New England, and play for the Patriots. It’s certainly been a dream come true.”

He had a good relationship with Bledsoe, and joined the team under his surveillance.

“You know, Drew Bledsoe is certainly one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. It’s going to be great to learn under him and compete for a job with the Patriots. Certainly this is a great step for me. It’s going to be a great challenge but I think I’m ready for it. Actually, I know I’m ready for it.”
