Report: New Lakers coach Frank Vogel has spoken with LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers will announce Frank Vogel as their new coach Monday, and it seems like the new coach has already talked to the star of the team.

Joe Vardon of The Athletic confirmed that Vogel has spoken with LeBron James. “Frank Vogel has spoken with LeBron, I’m told. Vogel will be announced as Lakers’ coach Monday,” he tweeted.

The Lakers hired NBA Hall of Famer and former Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks coach Jason Kidd as lead assistant.

Vogel has a career coaching record of 304-291 in the regular season with the Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic. He was 31-30 in the playoffs with the Pacers. The Lakers really hope that Vogel will turn the team into contenders. Los Angeles hasn’t made the playoffs since 2013.

The new coach will face a lot of pressure. Coaching LeBron James isn’t the easiest thing in the world. Some say that Kidd should be part of the coaching squad, suggesting that the front office isn’t doing Vogel a favor. LeBron and Kidd have a really good relationship and they were even teammates on Team USA. Can you imagine the chaos that would happen if LeBron decides to talk more with Kidd than Vogel?

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka welcomed the new coach and hinted that the Lakers needed him to become playoff contenders again.

“We are excited to add Frank Vogel as the next head coach of the Lakers,” said Pelinka. “Coach Vogel has a proven track record of success in the NBA Playoffs, and he reflects the core qualities we were looking for in a head coach, including, detailed game preparation, extreme hard work, and holding players accountable to the highest basketball standards.”

Vogel is really excited about the new opportunity. He said, “I am very excited for this opportunity to join the Lakers, a prestigious organization that I have long admired. I look forward to coaching such phenomenal talent and bringing my strategic vision to the team.”

Will LeBron accept the new head coach? He averaged 27.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 8.3 assists. King James will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2004-05.
