New England Patriots Make Trade With Lions For Tight End

The Detroit Lions added enough depth to the tight end unit, and it seems like they didn’t need Michael Roberts. The tight end will join the Patriots, and the information was confirmed by the Detroit Lions.

“Lions head coach Matt Patricia has confirmed the Lions traded TE Michael Roberts to the New England Patriots,” Tim Twentyman tweeted.

Justin Rogers of the Detroit News was the first to broke the story. According to this report, the Lions sent Roberts to the Patriots for a future late round pick in the NFL Draft.

“The Detroit Lions are trading tight end Michael Roberts to the Patriots for a future, late-round draft pick,” Rogers tweeted.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the pick will probably be a conditional 7th round selection in the 2020 NFl Draft.

“Compensation update: Lions are trading tight end Michael Roberts to the Patriots for a conditional 7th-round pick in 2020, per source.”

During his career, Roberts has just 146 yards and three touchdowns. He had several health problems and consistency. He was a former fourth-round pick of the Lions in 2017. However, he was now blocked on the Lions’ depth chard by jesse James and T.J. Hockenson. The Lions also picked Isaak Nauta.

Addind this depth makes sense for Detroit. The team didn’t have enough depth from the trio of Levine Toilolo, Luke Willson and Roberts. The team didn’t have enough depth which is why they added Hockenson and Nauta.

Nauta will hopefully develop nicely. Roberts is a veteran who was up and down throughout his time on the field. Is there any possibility that he becomes a major red zone player? He will have to fight for everything he will have to earn next season. Roberts will have to show he can be durable and solid to get a role.

“It was a disappointing year for me. I feel like I left a lot out there. It’s been a big offseason. I’m just trying to be the most well rounded tight end I can be. Just making sure my body is heathy, mentally strong and able to get through adversity,” he told media members.
