Warriors’ Likely Offers To Thompson, Durant Revealed

The Golden State Warriors were expected to win the championship again, but things took a completely different turn. The team lost its key players to injuries, and Klay Thompson had to leave Game 6 of the NBA Finals. He suffered a torn ACL, but that doesn’t change the fact that the Warriors will offer max contracts to Thomspon and Kevin Durant.

That’s what ESPN’s Brian Windhorst aid on First Take.

“It is my understanding, and talking with people in the Warriors organization, that their intention is to continue and offer Kevin Durant a full five-year max contract and to offer Klay [Thompson] a full five-year max contract.

“Those two decisions would put their payroll — including luxury taxes — over $350 million, and they’re going to be able to pay for it because they’re going to move across the Bay to a cash-cow arena, which is going to increase their team revenue enough to pay for it.

“In their devastation today, and they’re going to be very sad, they are not giving up on the core of this team.”

Head coach Steve Kerr expected a different outcome.

“We’ll know more about Klay,” he said after the loss. “But we can sit here and say, ‘Well, if this hadn’t happened or that hadn’t happened,’ that doesn’t matter. What matters is Kevin Durant is going to miss next season with an Achilles tear and Klay suffered a knee injury. And we’ll know, as I said, we’ll know more before too long. But it’s just brutal. It’s just brutal of what these guys have had to deal with.

” …  It’s amazement that we’re sitting in this position with, during the game we have a chance to win the game and force a Game 7 and go back to Toronto, and you just think, how? How has this group of guys put themselves in position to do it? And then as I said, when Klay goes down and is out for the game, it’s just sort of a — you’ve got to be kidding me, like this has to stop. But it’s just the way it’s gone. I don’t know if it’s related to five straight seasons of playing a hundred plus games and just all the wear and tear, but it’s devastating.”
