David Ortiz was shot in the Dominican Republican on Sunday evening. The MLB All-Star was shot at Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo. In his first talk to media members, Leo Ortiz revealed a few details about the shooting.
“They called me to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical center, but they did not tell me how he is or where he was transferred exactly,” Ortiz said. “At the moment, everything is confusing. I am trying to find out where they took my son.”
Following this information, Leo Ortiz provided another update.
“Best news we’ve heard so far come from David Ortiz’s father, Leo Ortiz, who told reporters gathered at the clinic that David is currently resting after surgery and that no organs were affected by the bullet,” ESPN reporter Marly Rivera wrote in a tweet. “He said the doctors anticipate full recovery.”
Many of Ortiz’s MLB peers sent messages of love and support. Los Angeles star Mike Trout and former Red Sox teammate Pedro Martinez were among the first to tweet.
“I’m at peace knowing you out of danger; you a strong man Compai, can’t wait to hear your voice,” Martinez wrote in a tweet. “My thoughts and prayers are with you, see you soon.”
“Listen, you only know the nickname “Big Papi” right now because Pedro Martinez cared about me. If he didn’t care about me as a human being, maybe I never get a chance. Maybe I don’t play 20 years. Maybe you don’t know who I am.
“But he cared about me, and the story ends this way. That’s my brother. Boston, thank you. When I came to this city, I didn’t know if I had a future. Now I have a home. Thank you for making me one of your own. I’d give you all a big f*****g hug if I could.”
Hopefully, Ortiz’s situation will be better in the next few days. He avoided a bigger danger, and things didn’t take a wrong turn. Everyone is sending messages of support, including Patriots receiver Julian Edelman. Let’s see what happens next.
