New England Patriots File Tampering Charges Against Texans

The Houston Texans may be in a big trouble at the moment, and the New England Patriots are giving them a terrible headache. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the information, and it turns out that the Patriots have filed tampering charges against the Texans.

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported that head coach Bill Belichick and other Patriots are taking their time with the Texans’ request for director of player personnel Nick Caserio.

According to early reports, the Patriots weren’t interested in making a deal with the Texans, and they were obviously upset by the whole situation. The NFL is now getting involved in the situation in order to determine if the Texans had violated league rules.

“Any interference by a member club with the employer-employee relationship of another club or any attempt by a club to impermissibly induce a person to seek employment with that club or with the NFL,” the Anti-Tampering Policy states.

If the NFL finds any evidence of wrongdoing, they will have to issue multiple penalties. Texans team personnel may be suspended, including head coach Bill O’Brien.

Former Patriots coach Jack Easterby may be the center of this investigation. He was hired as an executive vice president of team development in Houston. Easterby and Caserio attended the Super Bowl ring ceremony on Thursday night. One night later, general manager Brian Gaine was fired, and the Texans submitted an interview request for the personnel director.

“The Texans, as I’ve mentioned a couple of times,” Rapoport said on Wednesday, “still want to interview Nick Caserio, the do everything, de facto general manager for the New England Patriots, who is involved in so many things. Wearing a headset on game day, evaluating talent, running free agency, running the draft. Although Bill Belichick does have final say.

“From what I’m told, that interview has not yet happened because the Patriots want to keep Caserio. They don’t want him going anywhere, so it’s going to be fascinating to see what New England does. Do they up his contract? Do they try to give him a new title? No one under Bill Belichick has had the actual GM title. Is this a time to break precedent? Either way, the Patriots are biding time and trying to do this on their time frame to keep Caserio in house.”
