Tom Brady Cracks Joke About Edelman’s Quarterback Skills

Tom Brady has been part of the Patriots family for quite some time. He has seen players come and go, and he can definitely spot a talented quarterback. Need to know more about quarterback skills? Ask Brady!

Julian Edelman was a quarterback, too. The Patriots selected him in the seventh round of the 2009 NFl Draft. He became Brady’s favorite target, but TB12 always jokes about his quarterback skills.

In 2016, the Patriots didn’t have a backup quarterback and Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett suffered injuries. head coach Bill Belichick and his asisstants didn’t even think of contacting another player. Edelman was probably a real option for the team.

ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio discussed the problem. “Signing another quarterback is regarded, as I’m told, a last resort for the Patriots because, No. 1 they don’t want to have to cut somebody to create a roster spot for a quarterback, but No. 2 they actually would prefer to go with a Julian Edelman, even though he hasn’t played quarterback since college, because he knows the offense inside and out.”

Edelman was more interested in his role as a receiver.

“You gotta ask coach,” he said at the time. “I have no clue. I’m a receiver and I’m just gonna do what my coach asks me to do.”

And Edelman is an excellent receiver. Brady likes their relationship on the field a lot.

“I trust him so much,” Brady said before the AFC Championship Game in January. We put in so many hours together in the meeting room, in the film room…He’s always kind of been like my little brother, in a good way. He knows how much I love him. What he’s done with his career has been incredible.”

Brady and Edelman have the perfect quarterback-receiver relationship, and even former Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings agrees on that one.

So there was Jennings, a Viking himself in 2013. He could tell Packers receivers were scared just to say hello with Rodgers likely hyperanalyzing their every move from afar. To him, that’s sad. It shouldn’t be like this. He sees the relationship Brady has cultivated with Julian Edelman, with all of his receivers, and says, “Everyone wants that.” Those two spend time together off the field, and it carries into what matters on the field. Brady builds bonds for life, and that can be the difference between division titles and Super Bowls.
