Report: New England Patriots Sign New Tight End

With training camp on the horizon, the New England Patriots are adding some more depth to their tight end unit. The team continue to try and find players who can help replace tight end Rob Gronkowski. On the eve of their first training camp practice, they have finally filled the gap.

As first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the reigning world champions have signed free agent tight end Lance Kendricks to a one-year deal. The Patriots had an open roster spot and did not have to release anyone to make room for Kendricks. His agency confirmed the news Wednesday, adding that Kendricks will wear No. 81 in New England. Kendricks gives the Patriots another veteran presence at tight end as they look to replace Rob Gronkowski.

Kendricks brings plenty of experience to the table. A second-round pick by the Rams in 2011, Kendricks had 241 catches, 2,505 yards, and 19 touchdowns with the Rams and Packers. More of an athletic tight end than an in-line blocker at 6 feet 3 inches and 250 pounds, Kendricks spent the last two seasons in Green Bay as its second tight end, catching 37 passes for 373 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Patriots also signed Benjamin Watson in the wake of Rob Gronkowski’s retirement this offseason, but Watson will miss the first four games of the year due to a suspension. Matt LaCosse, Stephen Anderson, Ryan Izzo and Andrew Beck are also on hand.

Last year, the team opened their 53-man roster with four tight ends before moving Izzo to injured reserve. This year, two or three seems to be a more reasonable number, especially if New England wants to hang on to more receivers to further help the passing game.
