Report: Another Patriots Veteran O-Lineman Retires

New England Patriots offensive linemen are getting scarcer and scarcer this offseason.

Since the 2019 NFL season officially began in March, three Patriots veteran offensive linemen has chosen to retire. The last one was J.J. Dielman, who has decided to hang up his cleats and was placed on the reserve/retired list Monday.

Dielman, who was on the practice field for the Patriots on Friday sporting No. 63, was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Utah. He’s also spent time with the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks.

In May, offensive tackle Jared Veldheer retired less than two weeks after signing with the Patriots. The 31-year-old Veldheer started 113 games over nine seasons with the Oakland Raiders, Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos. He was expected to provide some much-needed depth and experience behind projected starting left tackle Isaiah Wynn this season.

Next was guard Brian Schwenke who retired Wednesday, the day when veteran players reported to the Patriots. Schwenke, 28, took part in three games for the Patriots last season before landing on injured reserve with a broken foot. Before that, he played in 57 games for the Tennessee Titans over five seasons, starting 30.

Schwenke’s retirement opened a spot on the Patriots’ 90-man roster.

The Patriots’ offensive line now consists of Isaiah Wynn, Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Shaq Mason, Marcus Cannon, Yodny Cajuste, Cole Croston, James Ferentz, Hjalte Froholdt, Tyler Gauthier, Ted Karras, Cedrick Lang, Dan Skipper and Tyree St. Louis.
