Report: New England Patriots Restructure Marcus Cannon’s Deal

NFL Network’s Michael Silver has revealed that Marcus Cannon’s deal with the New England Patriots has been restructured.

Cannon has been part of three Super Bowl teams and spent eight seasons with the Patriots. He initially signed a five-year $32.5 million extension in 2016, but the contract has been amended and now guarantees him $4.5 million in salary for the upcoming season. The move comes in conjunction with the retirement of offensive lineman J.J Dielman, a center who never got to play for New England.

Cannon started for the Patriots throughout the previous season’s playoffs which ended with a title over the Los Angeles Rams. He had 13 starts in the 2018 season – the most he’s had since 2016.

The right tackle was drafted by the Patriots in 2011 and sporadically started for the team until the 2016 season. That year, Cannon earned second-team All-Pro honors. He had to pause after a discovery at the NFL Scouting Combine that led to treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December of 2017, but he returned to form the following year.

Entering 2019, Marcus Cannon’s the most experienced offensive lineman on the Patriots’ roster and one of only two to appear in an actual non-preseason NFL game at the tackle position.

“Marcus has always done a solid job for us whenever he’s played,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said of Cannon in a November press conference soon after the extension surfaced. “I’m glad we have him going forward. He works hard. A quiet kid, but he’s very dependable, team oriented. He’s done a good job for us in the running game and the passing game. He’s been a good player.”

With the departure of Trent Brown this offseason, offensive tackle is an interesting area for the Patriots, with Cannon expected to remain on the right and Isaiah Wynn on the left.
