Report: Patriots Release Offensive Lineman, Sign Tackle

The New England Patriots made some interesting changes in their offensive line Tuesday, waiving one player and signing another.

Offensive lineman Cole Croston has been waived with a non-football injury designation. The team also signed offensive tackle Martez Ivey.

Croston, 25, signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa in 2017. He’s been in five games over the two seasons.

Ivey, 24, was a five-star recruit coming out of high school. During the pre-draft process, he dealt with a calf injury.

The Patriots still have an open roster spot after offensive lineman J.J. Dielman’s retirement.

The Patriots’ offensive line depth chart now includes Ivey, Isaiah Wynn, Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Shaq Mason, Marcus Cannon, Ted Karras, Dan Skipper, Hjalte Froholdt, Yodny Cajuste, James Ferentz, Cedrick Lang, Tyler Gauthier and Tyree St. Louis.

Cajuste is on the non-football injury list.

Here’s what Pro Football Focus had to say about the unit:

“For an organization that values consistency, the offensive line does not fall short of expectations. Shaq Mason found himself on PFF’s top 50 players heading into 2019 following a season where he earned career-high marks in a plethora of metrics including overall grade(85.0). We also ranked the Patriots’ duo as of Mason and Joe Thuney as the most-talented offensive guard tandem in the NFL. The Dante Scarnecchia-led unit will float among the top-ten offensive lines once again.”

PFF ranked the Patriots offensive line just behind the Indianapolis Colts and just ahead of the New Orleans Saints, projecting them to be the third-best unit in the AFC. The Philadelphia Eagles were ranked No. 1.
